Genetic Basis of Leaf-Shape Variation

Online Ahead of Issue

Current Biology publishes papers online ahead of the print issue on a weekly basis. This week’s posting includes papers on MSP/Eph receptor trafficking in C. elegans oocytes; collective motion and cannibalism during locust migration; chemical mimicry in wasp-pollinated orchids; nanos mRNA regulation in dendrites; and identification of cleaved siRNA and miRNA targets. Neurophysiology of the BOLD fMRI Signal in Awake Monkeys
Jozien B.M. Goense and Nikos K. Logothetis

Previous studies involving simultaneous intracortical recordings of neural activity and blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in primary visual cortex had relied upon anaesthetized monkeys. Concerns had been raised about the interpretation of the BOLD signal under anaesthesia, so here, Goense and Logothetis report the first study of the BOLD signal and neural activity in awake monkeys and find that the relationship between the fMRI signals and the different types of neural activity are similar in the awake and the anaesthetized animal.
