Online Ahead of Issue
Current Biology publishes papers online ahead of the print issue on a weekly basis. This week’s posting includes papers on in vitro fusion of synaptic vesicles; regulation of the localization and function of the chromokinesin Kid; identification of plant mechanosensitive channels; fluctuating selection in Soay sheep; flexible representations of dynamics in object manipulation; reverse evolution of armor in sticklebacks; influence of uncertainty on motor preparation; and activation of intracellular calcium signaling by extracellular acidification. Neurophysiology of the BOLD fMRI Signal in Awake Monkeys
Jozien B.M. Goense and Nikos K. Logothetis
Previous studies involving simultaneous intracortical recordings of neural activity and blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in primary visual cortex had relied upon anaesthetized monkeys. Concerns had been raised about the interpretation of the BOLD signal under anaesthesia, so here, Goense and Logothetis report the first study of the BOLD signal and neural activity in awake monkeys and find that the relationship between the fMRI signals and the different types of neural activity are similar in the awake and the anaesthetized animal.
